In Character Information
Name: Yukko Aioi
Series: Nichijou
Canon Standing: Time is relative in bizarro Japan but probably during
Age: Unknown, but she's highschool-aged so probably 16
Birthday & Astrology Sign: December 23/Capricorn.
Arcana: The Fool
Personality:
The thing that will stick out the most about Yukko Aioi is that she is very... eccentric. She does things that definitely make her stand out. It's a bit hard to describe. For example, Yukko regularly greets her friends with "Selamat Pagi", which is Indonesian for "Good Morning." She doesn't just uses this phrase because she likes the way it sounds though. It becomes increasingly obvious that Yukko is speaking Indonesian only to get a reaction. This is because she becomes confused and saddened when one morning her friend Mio does not even flinch to her greeting. This causes her to begin to overthink why Mio would simply ignore her greeting. The thought itself lodges inside her head, and for the rest of her trip to school she can't stop thinking about it. However, when her other friend Mai greets her back in Indonesian, she becomes so elated to the point of tears.
And while this sounds like an odd example... Yeah, Yukko's kind of like that.
The first thing you will notice about Yukko is very open about her emotions. In fact, at times she goes out of her way to exaggerate. When she’s happy, she’s beaming. If she’s bragging, her face gets so smug you just want to bonk her over the head. If she’s mad she will grit her teeth and glare with fire in her eyes. If she’s sad, well, she just mopes about. Normally she bounces back to her perky personality pretty quickly, but sometimes it’s much harder than waiting it out. This is also why, when Yukko gets really depressed, it is this sudden, gigantic, exaggerated halestorm of angst that consists soley of body twitching, incoherent mumblings and so many tears that you’d swear she’ll end up waterlogged. Of course, regardless of whether it’s mild disappointment or violent pity party, it’s always easy to get Yukko back to being Yukko. Just butter her up with lots of compliments and motivation (and take a few slaps on the back, from her) and she’ll be as good as new. Yukko is a sucker for compliments.
But why is Yukko like this? How does she bounce back so quickly? Her friends are awfully smart, and they rarely seem to flinch at her behavior. Why do they put up with it?
Becauuussseee Yukko is kind of stupid and doesn’t know any better? An idiot? A baka? Brainless? Clueless? With Delusions of Grandeur?
That’s all exaggeration actually. Yukko isn’t dumb per se(b-but that might depend on your definition of dumb, she certainly isn’t bright), she’s just very simple-minded, and easily distracted. She can certainly do well in things if she tries, but normally "trying" proves to be really hard. Things that would normally prove easy for most, such as sitting down to do studying or ordering a latte, holds extra challenge for Yukko. If you explain something to her, make sure to explain it in a clear, understandable way, because if you’re vague about it she will get utterly confused and misinterpret so if you tell her to jump, she'll curl up and not ask "how high". The biggest problem for her is… that she is impulsive! She doesn't try to assess the situation correctly when she really needs to and this causes her even more problems. But, oh, she can definitely overthink things… stupid things that she shouldn't be worried about.
Call it naïve or childish if you want, but Yukko just does.... things. She is all "shoot first, regret things later." She doesn't give time to realize that her ideas are incredibly stupid because she’s practically convinced herself that these ideas are perfect and will put them into practice before anything else. So when things don’t work out the way she imagines (I.E. ALMOST ALWAYS), it’s perfectly understandable why she screams and hoops and hollers. Because her little mind is blown so hard that it feels like her little world has just been shot to high hell. The definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over again expecting a different result. If that’s true, then Yukko must be a little cracked.
Yukko is a big dreamer too, if her grandeous daydreams and hasty spouts of poetry are any indication, and she seems to prefer going with whatever reasons her imagination comes up with rather than any form of logic.... which is probably why, out of everyone in her clas, she is the only one who truly believes that Nano is a robot. This is also why she overreacts whenever something even slightly disconcerting happens, especially when they fly out of left field. The principal has a habit of telling awfully lame jokes during his speeches, and Yukko can’t help but wonder if he knows just how terrible they are (and making a really, really big deal about it in the process). A bird lands on the edge of a window and starts talking, cue wacky reaction (though to be honest can you blame her for freaking out? I mean... talking bird...) Things like that.
There are also moments where Yukko can be downright egocentric too. For example, when someone does something that goes against what she’s expecting or appears even slightly suspicious, like if a friend appears to be mad at her, her mind paints pictures in order to explain why. Annndd by that I mean she just jumps to the conclusion that it must involve her somehow. She wonders if it’s something that she said, or something she did or or or maybe they just don’t like her! It must be about her, she has to know for sure, needs to know, no, she already knows it’s her, it has to be her, she needs to patch this hole up, mend things, And then suddenly she’s crying and flailing her arms about, apologizing profusely to her friend for something that she didn’t do. Normally it has nothing to do with her, but Yukko is one for jumping to conclusions.
That being said, Yukko is not self-centered. Sometimes it’s the complete opposite. While Yukko has her moments of thoughtlessness, when she does something hurtful she immediately feels guilty, and she quickly tries to patch things up much to her own detriment. When Yukko breaks her friend Mai’s statue she flusters up several ways of trying to make up for it from gluing the head back on to literally leaving an apology note on Mai’s desk with candy and flowers (before eventually just throwing the blasted thing in the incinerator.) She’s not a very good liar either, both due to the fact that she can’t handle feeling guilty and the fact that she sucks terribly at it.
Yukko just wants to stick out in this ordinary life of hers. She wants to find the extraordinary within the ordinary, but most of all she wants to be the extraordinary within the ordinary. She practically lives off how others view her, so she can’t handle it whenever people hate her or just ignore her. She does not crave for attention. She just wants to be known as unique and different without becoming something that she is not. She wants to be herself, but at the same time she really can't accept herself.
Backstory: Nichijou translates simply to “Regular Life”, or “My Ordinary Life.” And it is batshit crazy.
you know what just watch this because this is based on true events
Time is really relative to Nichijou. There’s a canon timeline of sorts, where events that happen in previous episodes come back in later episodes, but these are meant for cheap gags rather than an overarching storyline. Yukko does not have much of a background. She is a girl from Japan, she goes to high school and is known as a troublemaker (and once got a 01% percent on a test). She has a few friends, hates doing homework and wants to grow up to be a frill-necked lizard. Her mom is kind of abusive and whenever Yukko acts up she puts Yukko into a German Suplex, which would at least explain a few things. Her ordinary life.
Canon Powers:
Even though Nichijou is known for some crazy shit, technically Yukko doesn't have any powers...
Canon Weapons|Items:
Yukko has no weapons. She does, in fact, have one of those rubber bouncy balls that bounce really high!! (She thinks that would count, at least.)
Canon Baggage:
The previously mentioned bouncy ball, a few magician supplies (Fake-appearing flowers, deck of cards, chinese linking rings, etc) and a pair of Groucho Glasses (Pretty much everything you will see in this picture). She also has a bike that she uses to get around town. Also a mysterious can of wasabi that she just can't open.
